A Win for Civil Liberties; Now Let's Win it for the Children

OJPAC opposed all along the un-American "monitor" with dictatorial veto-power over the East Ramapo Central School District as proposed in A5355 and S3821. These bills would have suspended civil liberties in the district while ignoring the underfunding issue.

This district - according to Assembly members Jaffee and Zebrowski - already has oversight from multiple state agencies on matters of law. However, there is still a lack of trust and a lack of funding. The first step forward therefore is for the state to provide East Ramapo, in form of annual grants, the needed funding which should be allocated with oversight and approval by the Comptroller's Office. Long term, however, the state should adjust the skewed Foundation Aid formula to help all the districts across New York who are shortchanged by it.

It is also important for the School Board to enhance its communication with parents and stakeholders of the district from the public and private school communities. Together and with enough funding, East Ramapo will be great once again.
